Nestor’s Millinery Salon
The wonderful thing I have found about giving my Lost Fashion History of Dublin Tours over the last 5 summers is the fact that I have some wonderful tour-goers who share historical information and objects with me. One such object was this little paper bag from Nestor’s which the person in question had found a relative had saved with Brown Thomas and Switzers bags. I had no knowledge of Nestor’s but I reckoned because the bag was laid amongst these businesses it must have been a store where you bought something that gave you a thrill.
A little research later and I found Nestor’s Millinery Salon on 33 Exchequer Street in 1960s and it was owned by a Mrs Maeve O’Rourke but there are some records of a Miss Nestor Millinery that goes back to 1907 where she is located on 4 Sackville Street (O’Connell Street) and mentions how she has the latest Parisian modes, so it must have been a much loved business in Dublin for nearly 60 years. The drawing below from April, 1960 shows their redesigned showroom, I’d love to visit today to try on an Easter bonnet or two…
“Choose your Easter Bonnet from a fascinating selection at the new Nestor’s Millinery Salon, 33 Exchequer Street, Dublin.”
