Dublin’s Best Firesides
There’s a bitterly cold wind a-blowing in Dublin this weekend, so much so it’s shivering the timbers of my little loft. The only thing that can be done is to cosy up by firesides and there is nothing better than the warmth and glow of a real, open fireplace. Here are my top three places to find open fireplaces in Dublin – perfect spots to sip a Hot Toddy, read a book or warm the cockles of your heart.
Set in an old Georgian townhouse on North Great George’s Street-The Cobalt Cafe has without a doubt the best fireplaces in Dublin- and they light these open fireplaces in the winter. Visiting feels like being in someones home- which it is, with an eccentric owner, amazing antiques and delicious food this is a perfect spot to hole up in for the afternoon. It also has a garden which you can earmark for the summer!
10am-6pm Mon-Sat, opening times can be a bit illusive so check their Facebook page for more information before you go.

Always a favourite in my book Kehoe’s (lead picture above) on South Anne Street has the best and cosiest snugs. Upstairs is like an old-fashioned living room complete with piano and blazing open fires in the winter, perfect for evenings when ‘night stirred at sea and the fire brought a crowd in’.
9 South Anne Street,
Dublin 2
Mentioned in James Joyce’s Dubliners Mulligan’s is a step back to all the joys of a Victorian pub with low dim lighting, polished wooden counters and warming open fires. JFK also had a sup of the black stuff here and the fireplaces and snugs are a secret daytime, all to yourself type of delight.
